Visit & Interaction : Ar. Sathya Prakash Varanashi, Bangalore - 23/12/2017

Ar. Sathya Prakash Varanashi visited our college on Saturday 23rd December 2017. He visited the premises and appreciated the academic vigour of the college. The interaction with the students was especially very informative, enriching and inspiring.

Ar. Sathya Prakash Varanashi studied architecture in Bangalore, urban design in Delhi and heritage conservation in England. A former Professor of Architecture, he is involved in academics, outreach activities, freelance writing, professional associations and NGO initiatives.

ACARA 2018 - Get Ready Third Year Students of Academic Session 2017-18 - 01/12/2017

Dear Principal / Faculty Members / Architecture Students, 

VIT's Padmabhushan Dr. Vasantdada Patil College of Architecture (PVPCOA), Pune are pleased to invite the students from all the architectural colleges in India, to Get Ready to participate in Indian Domestic Contest for Architectural Rookies (ACARA) to be held at PVPCOA, Pune on Saturday, 4th August 2018. The students are expected to present their Architectural Design Project done in Third year (term I or term II) of academic session 2017-18. 

The two Gold winner students of the Indian Domestic Contest - 2018 get an opportunity to represent India at international level ie. at Asian Contest for Asian Contest of Architectural Rookie’s Award (ACARA-2018) 

This mail is a pre-cursor for the students studying in Third year B. Arch. (of academic session 2017-18) to produce work to enable them to participate in ACARA-2018 - Indian Domestic Contest to be held at PVP College of Architecture on Saturday, 4th August 2018. 

The faculty needs to encourage the students to evolve a project and enroll the students for the contest. Attached herewith is the poster for the same. Kindly print and display it to bring it to the notice of the students. 

BROAD DETAILS OF ACARA: 

ACARA is an International contest for students of Architecture, held every year in order to contribute to architectural education and establish rich networking associated with modern architecture in Asia. This design competition has its own uniqueness that it is open only for the 4th year students (of academic session 2018-19) to present their 3rd Year B. Arch Architectural Design work ( of academic session 2017-18), which is an important bench mark & mid destination in the five year long course of Architecture. 

Dr. Youngil Lee from Japan is the Chief organiser for ACARA. The objective of ACARA competition is to review, judge& evaluate architectural works and ideas created by students studying architectural design in universities in various countries across Asia like Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, Japan, Vietnam & India. 

For the Indian Domestic Contest For Architectural Rookie’s Award 2018, (hosted by PVP college of architecture) invitation will be sent to all the 400 plus colleges recognised by Council of Architecture in India.

Hands on Workshop 2017 : Adaptable Campus - 23/11/2017 to 27/11/2017

We VIT's PVP College of Architecture, Pune organised a Hands on Workshop (HoW) 2017 - ADAPTABLE CAMPUS from Thursday, 23rd November 2017 to Monday, 27th November 2017. 

Total 163 students of II Year B. Arch. & III Year B. Arch. participated in this workshop along with HoW team.

The theme for this year - "reducing foot print and increasing handprints for making college campus adaptable". 

Based on cosumption habits & behaviour pattern 4 heads were identified for the workshop - 
1. Waste management, 
2. Water management, 
3. Energy management, 
4. Ecosystem management 

We have started the workshop with following site visits to understand non-convetional approaches developed / adopted: 
1. Appa Patwardhan Safai wa Paryawaran Tantraniketan, Dehugaon & Vidyankur School, Vadgaon sheri, Pune - to study decentralised wastewater system developed by. Dr. S. V. Mapuskar (awarded Padmashree posthumously for his work in field of public health & sanitation) - DOSIWAM 
2. Sipna forest, Khadakwasla & Fanuc industries, Chakan (ecosystem developed by Oikos, Pune) - to study ecosystem & natural habitat developed by manmade interventions 
3. Appropriate Rural Technology Institute, Phaltan - to study the different systems developed for rural context, some of which are very much appropriate for adaptation in urban context for managing waste within the compound wall 
4. Tolani Maritime Institute, Induri, Talegaon - waste water recycling 
5. Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Sanstha, Karve Naga, Pune - Biogas plant - using food waste & generate energy 
6. Pebbles II, Bavdhan, Pune - water softners & wastewater reuse for a residential complex 

Followed by these site visits, students were oriented towards the understanding of the geography, geology & terrain of the college campus under guidance of Dr. Shikant Gabale, on Thursday, 23rd November 2017.

RSP : 2nd Year B. Arch. : Majuli, Assam - 04/11/2017 to 16/11/2017

As the first semester of the Academic session 2017-18 culminates with the examinations and juries, it was time for a break from the daily routine for the students and experience & learn new environments and lifestyles through Relative Study Program (RSP). 

This year, the Second year students went to the Island Village of Majuli in Assam. The visit was scheduled from Saturday, 4th November 2017 to Thursday, 16th November 2017.

RSP : 3rd Year B. Arch. : Understanding & Exploring the City of Amritsar - 4/11/2017 to 16/11/2017

As the first semester of the Academic session 2017-18 culminates with the examinations and juries, it was time for a break from the daily routine for the students and experience & learn new environments and lifestyles through Relative Study Program (RSP). 

 This year, the third year students explored the Walled city of Amritsar by documenting the lifestyles, living spaces, community spaces, markets and streets. They also visited the Chandigarh and the Virasat-e-Khalsa Museum. The visit was scheduled from Saturday, 4th November 2017 to Thursday, 16th November 2017.

As the part of Academic Curriculum, First Year students were taken to Pune University on Saturday, 14th October 2017 for Sketching exercise.

The visit aimed at making student understand the proportions, architectural details and spaces through sketching and also understand the technological and material aspects of any building. The students mainly sketched the Main Building of Pune University and the Set Bhavan.

Visit & Interaction : Ar. Habeeb Khan, Nagpur - 08/09/2017

PVPCOA was pleasured by the visit of Ar. Habeeb Khan on Friday 8th September 2017 to our college. 

Ar. Khan is a graduate from VNIT, Nagpur and post graduate from University of Illinois. After his brief work in Philadelphia, he returned to India and established his practice in Nagpur alongwith his wife, Ar. Smita Khan. 

Their firm intensely works within the vernacular and traditional architecture. He has also been involved in teaching and is currently the Director of Priyadarshini Institute of Architecture in Nagpur. He had a brief interaction with students and faculty during his visit.

Visit & Interaction : Ar. Nitin Kilawala, Mumbai - 01/09/2017

Ar. Nitin Kilawala from Mumbai, visited our college on Friday, 1st September 2017. He had a brief visit during which he was acquainted with the college and also had quick interactions with the faculty and students.

Ar. Kilawala is a recipient of various National  level Awards including the IIA and IID excellence in Architecture and Interior Design respectively. In 1996 he was also awarded the JK cement Architect of the Year Award.

He is the Director and partner at the firm Group Seven Architects and Planners Pvt. Ltd. in Mumbai. He strongly believes that the benefit of Design should percolate to the masses.

Faculty Seminar : Pre- Design by Ar. Naresh Shah, Ahmedabad - 19/08/2017

On Saturday, 19th August 2017, a Seminar on Pre-Design by Ar. Naresh Shah from Ahmedabad was organised for the Faculty Members.

The Seminar was a one day program which was based on the review of the book " an introduction to Pre-Design " penned by Ar. Shah and published by Council of Architecture. 

The intention of the seminar was to emphasize the importance of Pre-design process and its intrinsic value to the subsequent design process. This will not only help the faculty to focus on creative and innovative issues but also help guide students to create better design solutions.
