PvpcoaAcademicEvent19-20- Visit&Interaction- Placemaking_India

Placemaking India Weekend 2019 edition commenced at PVPCOA, Pune, where dignitaries from myriad disciplines (social workers, geographers, urban planners, urban designers, architects, engineers, management experts) came together to explore, ideate and discuss the meaning of 'Placemaking.'

These 25 guests were welcomed by Ar. Prof. Prasanna Desai along with Ar. Shekhar Garud (Academic Co-ordinator), Team Six & faculty members (of PVPCOA).

The atrium, the 'atma' (soul) of our institute reverberated with quite some brio!

Guests inquisitively explored the campus, imbibing & disseminating information regarding Placemaking.

From intently listening to the vision of the 'Wake-up Studio' concept, (Ar. Pattabi Raman's brain child, adopted by PVPCOA in 2009-10), to ardently observing and going through the Section Wall, Exhibition Hall, Lucknow Wall, Hinjewadi & Bhugaon Panels and the Exit Panels; the guests proceeded towards the studio space. Here, they interacted with students of B.Arch. IIIrd yr. who were compiling their study post their 'Kashi Yatra,' (RSP at Varanasi).

After a group photograph, and quick tea, Mrs. Vineeta Shetty, (founder of The Smart Citizen, India) opened the seminar.

Ms. Mahak Agrawal (Urban Planner), from ISOCARP began the string of presentations on ', Placemaking.'

This was followed by a presentation by Urban designer, Ar. Hrishikesh Ashtekar on how in PVPCOA the idea of 'placemaking,' is taught through the facuties of design, humanities & technology, and further explored by the students across all five years of B.Arch., and two years of M.Arch. in Landscape Architecture and Urban Design.

In a glance, the studios are run on the paradigm of Response to City & Environment, City as a Classroom, City as a Live Lab, Framework of 9Cs (City, Chronology, Context, Culture, Commerce, Community, Cluster, Cell, Craft of Construction); thereby generating projects like Humanising Hinjawadi, Reconceptualising Bhugaon, Emerging Landscapes- study of Urban Fringes, Transit Oriented Development in Pune, Pune Biennale.

Under the elective, 'People in Urban Space,' conducted by Urban designer, Ar. Anubandh Hambarde; 'Side Walks,' were screened. A 5min video titled, 'Navras' captured the pulse of DP Road, Pune; (filmed by first year students of the Post Graduate courses in Landscape Architecture and Urban Design at PVPCOA, Pune).

Ar. Prof. Prasanna Desai, took over the podium as he wore one of his hats, the Principal of PDA (Prasanna Desai Associates), Pune. Various inspiring stories behind each project, kept the audience engrossed.

Broadly, the following parameters were discussed- Vibrancy, Permeability, Safety, Security (Eyes on the Streets), People Participation, Sense of Ownership, City & Community Connect, Identity, Values (cultural, social, natural, historic, economic), Reclaiming Space for People, Transforming the 'Dasha' (दशा) to 'Disha' (दिशा), power of Spatial organization (order), Demonstrated through drawing lines on images & videos, Equity, Smart streets as Malls under the canopy of the trees, the meaning of the word SMART: Sustainability Manageable Affordability Responsive Technology (We truly hope 'udaan' returns on the streets of Pune.)

With the felicitation of Mrs. Vineeta Shetty (founder of Smart Citizen, India) and Shri Vikash Chandra (Finance & PPP Expert, Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs, GoI) by Adv. Abhay Chhajed (Chairman, V.I.T.), we concluded Part A, Day 1 of the Placemaking India Weekend 2019.

Post lunch, the guests proceeded towards DP Road, Aundh; or as it is called; 'Aundh Mall under the tree canopy.'

Special thanks to Adv. Abhay Chhajed, Shri Vikash Chandra and Mrs. Vineeta Shetty for gracing our institute.

All of us at PVPCOA, are charged up after receiving various insights, recommendations for improvement and enhancement of our institute.

An enriching experience, has left us yearning for more

See you all very soon!

Warm regards,
PVPCOA, Pune
